In order to reborn a doll it must be stripped of its factory paint. Most standard dolls come with a mass produced orange waxy look to them. This paint must be removed with harsh chemicals and if not correctly the doll with have the appearance of bruises on it. A consistent layer of new pigment must be laid down in order to give the artists a base from which to work.
