Heavy Metal Fans Cycle from Walthamstow to Donington for Charity
11 Jun 2025

Around 30 dedicated cyclists known as the Heavy Metal Truants have completed their annual 150-mile charity ride from Walthamstow to Donington Park, home of the Download Festival. The event blends a passion for music with a commitment to helping children’s causes.
The ride, which started at Big Penny Social in Walthamstow, marked the 12th edition of this unique fundraiser. Participants rode through rain and heat, arriving just in time for the opening of the UK’s biggest heavy metal festival. This year’s efforts have already raised nearly £40,000, with donations still rolling in toward their £100,000 goal.
Funds raised will benefit four charities: Teenage Cancer Trust, Save the Children, Nordoff and Robbins Music Therapy, and NSPCC. The cyclists, many of whom are Download regulars, train for months and cover the costs themselves so that all proceeds go directly to charity.
Organiser Alexander Milas said, “It’s gruelling, but it’s about the cause. And it’s also an amazing way to see the UK.” The journey, part pilgrimage and part community event, has grown in visibility and support over the years.
Locals gathered in Walthamstow to send the cyclists off, cheering them on as they embarked on the three-day challenge. The group’s efforts highlight the strength of grassroots fundraising and the enduring power of community spirit.
