Five wards at Whipps Cross Hospital have been given awards for the standard of their end-of-life care.

The intensive care unit, Syringa Ward, Sage Ward, Sycamore Ward and the Margaret Centre have all received Hallmark Awards from the Gold Standards Framework, a charity that works on dignity in end-of-life care.

In intensive care, staff put a series of changes in place over two years. They included making conversations about what patients want a normal part of care, and introducing "I Am a Person" boards to help staff see the person rather than the patient.

Paloma Carretero Corchado, matron for the ICU, said: "We have made several small changes that have had a big impact on making the environment feel more welcoming."

Shanthini Avorgbedor, end-of-life care education facilitator, said: "Achieving GSF accreditation requires commitment, collaboration and a shared vision."

The award recognises teamwork and compassion across all five departments. Accreditation is reviewed every three years, and the hospital plans to extend the programme to more wards.

Staff will be formally recognised at the GSF Hallmark Awards Ceremony in Birmingham on 22 September.
