Stargazing Event Illuminates Walthamstow Wetlands

Local residents were treated to a celestial evening on March 24 as the London Wildlife Trust hosted a stargazing event at Walthamstow Wetlands.

Held as part of the Trust’s nature engagement programme, the event offered a beginner-friendly introduction to the night sky. Attendees learned to identify constellations, navigate using the stars, and understand how urban light pollution impacts stargazing opportunities.

Experts provided telescopes and guided participants through the basics of astronomy, while sharing stories about mythology and the history of stargazing. The session aimed to connect residents with both the natural world and each other through a shared appreciation of the night sky.

Walthamstow Wetlands, Europe’s largest urban wetland reserve, provided an ideal backdrop for the event. Despite its proximity to central London, the area maintains pockets of darkness suitable for stargazing.

Organisers reported a strong turnout and expressed interest in hosting future events, particularly during astronomical events like meteor showers or eclipses.

Residents interested in future sessions or other local nature events can follow London Wildlife Trust updates or visit the Walthamstow Wetlands visitor centre.
