Two retired racing greyhounds called Glenda and Nora were the guests of honour at a charity quiz night held on the grounds of the old Walthamstow Stadium.
Better Gym Walthamstow Stadium, which sits on the site of the famous greyhound racetrack, hosted the fundraiser on 18th September for Romford Retired Greyhounds, part of the Home Run Hounds Greyhound Charity. Over the past decade the charity has helped more than 2,000 former racing greyhounds find new homes.
The evening was organised by GLL and brought together gym members, people from outside the gym, staff, and Katie and Andrew Isaac from Romford Retired Greyhounds — along with Glenda and Nora themselves.
Guests took part in a quiz on greyhound racing and the history of Walthamstow Stadium, as well as team challenges, Jenga and close-up magic. Katie Isaac spoke to the room about the charity's work and about greyhounds as family pets.
Historical photographs were put on display, tracing the stadium from its opening in 1933 through to its closure as a racing venue in 2008.
GLL redeveloped the site and opened the gym in 2019, with more than 100 fitness stations and a 22-metre indoor running track — the longest in Waltham Forest.
Andrew Isaac said: "We were delighted to join forces with Better Gym Walthamstow Stadium and bring its history to life for the local community."
Assistant manager Olaniyi Shokunbi said: "This unique event brought together existing members, non-members, a local charity and the gym team in a relaxed community setting."
