Walthamstow Salvation Army is inviting residents to pick up, swap or donate winter coats for free at its annual coat exchange.

The event takes place on Saturday 7 November, from 9:30am to 1pm, at the church at 434 Forest Road, Walthamstow. Coats for both adults and children will be available at no cost.

People who want to donate warm coats can drop them off at the church from Monday 26 October to Thursday 5 November.

This is the fifth year the church has run the initiative, which began in 2021 as living costs rose. At last year's event, 500 coats were given out to people in need.

Major Julie Pell, the church leader, said: "As the cost of living continues to increase and temperatures fall, we see every day how many families and individuals in our community are struggling to afford the basics like a warm winter coat."

She added that the scheme also helps "keep quality clothes out of landfill and in use for longer."

The church also runs a Community Living Room every Friday, offering tea and coffee where residents can socialise and meet their neighbours.
