Residents across Walthamstow have been left shaken following a wave of red paint and graffiti attacks on their homes, which police believe are part of a criminal campaign linked to illegal money lending.

The incidents, which occurred throughout March, involve red paint being splashed across front doors, windows, and pavements, alongside disturbing graffiti including numbers and the word "brothel." Victims appear to have been targeted by organised gangs operating illegal loan shark networks.

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are investigating these acts as part of a broader pattern of harassment and intimidation affecting properties not only in Walthamstow but across other areas of London. A spokesperson said, “We believe these incidents are designed to coerce and threaten individuals who have been caught in cycles of debt through illegal lending.”

Local MP Stella Creasy has called for urgent intervention and increased protection for affected households. “This criminal practice is both terrifying and damaging. It’s vital that the victims are supported, and that those responsible are held to account,” she said.

Community members have taken to social media to share experiences, with some reporting long delays in police response. Victim support organisations are urging residents not to clean the vandalism immediately, as it can serve as vital evidence.

The National Illegal Money Lending Team is working alongside the police, offering help to victims and encouraging anyone experiencing intimidation to come forward. Walthamstow residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
