Women across Waltham Forest gathered in early December to take part in a “Reclaim the Night” demonstration, responding to growing concerns about safety in local public spaces.

The event, held on Saturday 6 December near Hollow Ponds, invited women and girls to come together at dusk, wearing bright colours and carrying torches and placards. Organisers said the aim was to create a visible and collective presence in an area where many residents have reported feeling unsafe.

The demonstration formed part of the wider 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign highlighting the impact of violence against women and girls. Participants were encouraged to stand in solidarity and amplify concerns about safety in parks and open spaces across the borough.

Organisers highlighted Hollow Ponds specifically, noting that recent reported incidents had contributed to a sense of unease among women using the area. The march sought to challenge that fear and call for stronger action from authorities responsible for public safety.

The gathering was inclusive in scope, welcoming women, trans and non-binary people, as well as young boys accompanied by guardians. Attendees were asked to be “loud, visible, and strong together,” reinforcing a collective message about reclaiming shared spaces.

This local action reflected wider conversations taking place across London about safety in public areas, particularly after dark. Campaigners continue to call for increased accountability and practical measures to ensure parks and streets feel safe and accessible for everyone.
