The Walthamstow Griffin sculpture has marked its third anniversary this December, celebrating a unique piece of public art that has become a local landmark. Situated on the corner of Carisbrooke Road and Walthamstow High Street, the sculpture was created in 2022 by local artists using discarded plastic materials. It stands as a tribute to the area’s rich history and community spirit.

Commissioned by the community arts organisation Wood Street Walls, the piece symbolises transformation and heritage. The Griffin references Walthamstow Market and the town’s historical crest, combining modern reuse with traditional symbolism. It continues to be a point of pride for local residents and a visual reminder of how art can inspire environmental consciousness and civic identity.

Its anniversary has been marked by renewed appreciation for the role of community-led public art in shaping local spaces.
