Local Feature: Walthamstow’s 100-Year-Old Greek Amphitheatre

Walthamstow is celebrating the centenary of its open-air Greek amphitheatre, a historic cultural landmark tucked within a local state school. Built in the 1920s by unemployed workers under Poor Law reforms, the amphitheatre remains one of the few of its kind in the country.

Inaugurated in 1925 with a performance of Medea starring Dame Sybil Thorndike, the venue has continued to host classical drama productions for a century. To mark its 100th anniversary, the Greek Theatre Players are staging Antony and Cleopatra from 23–26 July 2025.

The amphitheatre has been a source of community pride and an enduring symbol of resilience and cultural aspiration. It exemplifies how historical spaces can continue to inspire through education, art, and local participation.
