Children from three Waltham Forest primary schools are getting ready for one of the biggest stages in the country. Pupils from Thorpe Hall, Gwyn Jones and Handsworth primary schools will perform at the Royal Albert Hall on 9 and 10 November as part of the Music for Youth Proms.

They will be part of the world premiere of As I Rise, a new commissioned work by composer James B. Wilson with lyrics by poet Alex Wharton. The piece was inspired by NASA's Artemis missions. A massed children's choir will sing it with a full orchestra, in a celebration of "human ambition, innovation and the extraordinary possibilities of working together."

The performance is part of Music for Youth's Accelerando programme, which works with twelve London primary schools to build up classroom music teaching and tackle the shortage of music teachers. Through the programme, teachers get specialist training to help them nurture musical talent and bring good music teaching to more children.

The local pupils will be among more than 3,000 young performers across the two evenings, with about 1,500 young artists on stage each night. The line-up includes gospel choirs, jazz orchestras, steel bands and rock groups.
