The music venue promised in the basement of The Altham on Blackhorse Lane is still without an operator, leaving its opening delayed indefinitely.
The 500-capacity space sits within the nine-storey building, which opened to residents three months ago. The venue itself remains empty while an operator is sought to carry out the final fit-out.
Developer Morro said it is in "active discussions with a number of interested parties". It has completed the space to a "warm shell" — a partially finished property with basic infrastructure in place, but still needing stage equipment, sound systems, bars and furnishings installed.
The venue is intended to revive the musical legacy of The Standard pub, which closed in 2011. Finding someone to take it on has proved difficult. One resident said: "The reality is very few independent live music venues will have the deep pockets needed to invest into this space."
The numbers behind that concern are stark. The Music Venue Trust puts average profit margins at UK grassroots venues at 2.5% in 2025, with 53% making no profit at all. Planning documents contain no strict requirement for the owner to offer rent-free periods or to contribute towards fit-out costs.
Waltham Forest Council confirmed that responsibility for finding an operator rests with Morro, though the council supports the process. Councillor Eva Tabbasam said: "There is no confirmed opening date, as this will depend on securing an operator and completing the necessary fit-out works."
