Refurbishment begins on West Pavilion at Leyton Sports Ground
3 Aug 2026
Waltham Forest Council has begun refurbishment work on the West Pavilion at Leyton Sports Ground, a modest section of the historic Cricket Pavilion building that previously served as the umpire's office.
The work is being funded through a "small allocation" of UK Shared Prosperity Fund money. The council has secured planning permission and listed building consent for the scheme, which was developed with the community in 2023.
Once finished, the space is intended to serve as a temporary rest area for sports ground users during halftime breaks, and the town hall says it may also provide "flexible meeting space for council services".
Efforts to bring the pavilion back into use go back to 2018. Early plans would have turned it into a food hall with a restaurant, café, training kitchen using locally sourced ingredients and a food market by 2021. A 2019 Heritage Lottery Fund application for £1.5million was unsuccessful, and the "Real Food Hub" concept was dropped by early 2021. A later bid for Greater London Authority civic partnership funding also failed to secure money.
