Early proposals have been drawn up for what the developer behind them calls a "significant number of new homes" on an industrial site in Lea Bridge.
The plans, from Selby Projects, would see Golden House in Orient Way redeveloped into a "new neighbourhood" with shops and community spaces alongside housing.
The site formed part of the Lea Bridge Gasworks, which operated from the mid-19th century until it closed in the early 2000s. Waltham Forest Council has identified it for regeneration through its Local Plan, the document that earmarks sites across the borough for around 27,000 new homes and shops.
"Over recent years, Lea Bridge has seen significant investment and change, with new homes, businesses and community infrastructure," Selby Projects said in promotional material.
The developer says the scheme would deliver the "maximum viable number" of affordable homes and "high-quality modern homes" across a mix of types, tenures and sizes.
Also proposed are new parks and "new walking connections between Elm Park Road and the Berkeley Lea Bridge Gasworks site".
A first round of consultation was held in July, with further public consultation scheduled for September. Plans are due to be formally submitted to the council in November and to reach the planning committee at some point in 2027.
