Cleaners and catering staff at Forest School are stepping up their strike over proposed pay cuts of up to 13.5 per cent, according to the Unite union.

The workers are employed at the private school by contractor Compass Group. They will take industrial action from Monday 2 November until 17 November.

The dispute centres on plans to move their contracts to term-time only, which would leave staff without seven to eight weeks' pay during the school holidays. Unite says the workers already earn only slightly above the minimum wage and would see a big drop in their annual income.

The new action follows a five-day strike that began on 28 September.

The union says the workers have support from parents and pupils, and that the school's student council recently voted in favour of the Unite members' action.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said the workers were already among the lowest paid at Forest School. She called the attempt to impose further pay cuts "completely unreasonable".

The school and Compass Group were contacted for comment.
