Clean water campaigners are holding A Vigil for the River Lea on Sunday 25 October to draw attention to the river's declining ecological health.

The event runs from 5pm to 7pm at Leaside, 34 Spring Lane, Hackney E5 9HQ, on the stretch of the Lea that runs alongside the marshes shared with Waltham Forest.

Organiser Matthew Bennett describes it as 'part river ritual, part live comedy night, part community workshop, and part political pressure'.

'We'll hear from people who know and care for the marshes, get a quick and useful diagnosis of what is affecting the Lea, unpick what Thames Water, regulators and government are responsible for,' he said.

The programme includes comedian Coral Bevan performing as 'Fisherman Jon', with a live fishing game called 'What's On The End of My Rod?' that covers sewage, water bills and pollution.

The event is open to all ages and will have a bar. People who attend will be invited to back Surfers Against Sewage's Clean the Bill campaign, which is calling for government reform of how water is managed and regulated.

Tickets are available through Ticket Tailor.
