Waltham Forest Council has removed the traffic restriction at Cherrydown Avenue in Chingford Mount. The previous traffic arrangements will be reinstated from Monday 12 October 2026.
The council said the decision follows feedback from residents, businesses and ward councillors.
What the restriction was for
The restriction was part of plans to create what the council called "a safer, greener, more pedestrian-friendly space for the community", while keeping bus services running and access for residents. The plans were developed through the Chingford Mount Area Framework and the Child-friendly Chingford Local Regeneration Fund.
Why it is being removed
After extensive discussions with Transport for London (TfL) Buses, the council concluded that the bus stops and stands could not be reconfigured within the budget and timeframe available. Feedback had also raised concerns about congestion and accessibility. Together, these led to the decision to remove the restriction.
What about fines?
Fines issued up to 12 October 2026 still apply, the council said. No further fines will be issued now that the restriction has been suspended.
Albert Crescent work continues
The scheme is not being dropped entirely. Improvements to Albert Crescent will go ahead, including:
- new planting areas and green landscaping
- new seating areas
- improved signage
- repairs and resurfacing
That work is expected to be finished in 2027. The council also pointed to investment elsewhere in Chingford Mount, including completed upgrades at Chase Lane Park, Memorial Park and the Pavilion building cafe.
The outcome shows the trade-off that faced the scheme. The council wanted a quieter, more pedestrian-friendly street, but it also had to keep buses running and traffic moving through a busy town centre.
