An application has been submitted for significant works to an existing industrial building in Walthamstow, with the plans proposing to retain much of the current structure while adding new floors and extensions to change how the site is used.

The site is Arley Works at 33 Sutherland Road, E17. The application, reference 261717, is described in the public notice as "part retention of existing building with proposed upward extension, rear single storey extension, and external alterations to facilitate a six-storey mixed use development comprising change of use of ground floor from Use Class B8".

Retaining rather than demolishing the existing building is the notable feature here: the proposal builds upward and outward from what is already standing, rather than clearing the plot first.

The application is one of 24 lodged with Waltham Forest Council in the latest batch of public notices. Most are considerably smaller in scale - single-storey rear extensions to homes across Walthamstow, Leyton, Chingford and the surrounding area, and a run of lawful development certificates for roof extensions and dormers.
