Council Awards Funding to Nine Community Groups for Active Travel Projects

Waltham Forest Council has announced new funding for nine local groups as part of its Community Walking and Cycling Fund. The initiative, now in its seventh year, has already supported 57 projects and helped more than 4,000 residents become more active through walking and cycling.

This year’s recipients include SisterCycle, a community group that empowers women—especially from minority backgrounds—to take up cycling. Other projects will focus on family bike rides, maintenance skills, and safe travel education.

Councillor Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate and Air Quality, said the fund is vital in promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing car use. “By supporting grassroots groups, we’re ensuring that every part of our borough can benefit from active travel,” he stated.

The scheme is part of the council’s broader efforts to tackle climate change and encourage sustainable transport. Local organisations interested in future funding rounds are encouraged to apply when the next round opens later this year.
